About Jerome Myers

Among the Ashcan generation, he was the tender one. While Sloan and Bellows chased grit and prizefighters, this Virginia-born painter (1867–1940) turned his attention to the Lower East Side's immigrant families, street vendors, and the small theaters of New York's tenement districts. He arrived in the city in 1886, studied at Cooper Union and the Art Students League, and showed alongside the radicals in the 1913 Armory Show, which he helped organize. His scenes of children at play and evening gatherings carry an affection that feels unusual for the period. For collectors drawn to early American urban realism, his work offers warmth where contemporaries often delivered edge.
