About Richard Nicolaus Roland Holst

A central figure in Dutch Symbolism and one of the architects of the monumental decorative style that shaped early twentieth-century Netherlands, Roland Holst (1868-1938) moved fluidly between easel painting, lithography, stained glass, and large-scale murals. His early work absorbed the spiritual gravity of Toorop and the English Arts and Crafts movement, while his mature style hardened into a clear, almost hieratic line suited to public commissions, including the windows and murals he designed for the Beurs van Berlage and Dutch labour buildings. For a contemporary viewer, his prints offer that rare combination of socialist conviction and mystical restraint - deliberate, symbolic, and built to last on a wall.
