About Salvator Rosa

Long before Romanticism had a name, this seventeenth-century Neapolitan was painting its mood. Born in 1615 near Naples, he made his reputation with wild landscapes of bandits, hermits and storm-cracked trees that ran directly against the calm classicism of Claude and Poussin. He was also a poet, a satirist and a printmaker of real skill, and his etchings of soldiers and figure studies show a draftsman thinking on copper, fast and assured. The English picturesque painters of the next century borrowed his moodiness wholesale. For a contemporary viewer, his work still reads as cinematic, restless and pleasingly strange.
