About Daniel Seghers

Few painters have done more to define the Flemish flower piece than this seventeenth-century Jesuit lay brother, who trained under Jan Brueghel the Elder in Antwerp and spent most of his career producing devotional garlands from the monastery there. Born in 1590, he developed a cooler, more sculptural approach to floral painting than his teacher, often arranging blooms around a central cartouche painted by a collaborator such as Erasmus Quellinus or Cornelis Schut. His patrons included the Stadtholder Frederick Henry and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. For anyone drawn to botanical precision married to genuine spiritual seriousness, his vases and garlands remain the high point of the genre.
