About Poster

Jean de Paléologue, who signed his work simply as PAL, was one of the defining poster artists of the Belle Époque, working in Paris through the 1890s alongside Chéret, Mucha, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Romanian-born and London-trained, he brought a theatrical flair to lithographic advertising, particularly for the Folies Bergère, cycling brands, and the cabarets of Montmartre. His women are taller, more athletic, and more knowingly modern than those of his contemporaries, set against flat fields of confident color. For anyone drawn to the graphic energy of early French commercial art, PAL's posters still read as fresh, witty, and unmistakably of their moment.
