About Hiroshige

The last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) brought a quiet, atmospheric sensibility to Japanese woodblock printing just as the form was reaching its peak. Where his contemporary Hokusai favored drama and dynamic line, Hiroshige built his reputation on weather and mood: rain slanting across a bridge, snow muffling a village, mist softening a distant mountain. His landscape series, particularly the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, later reshaped European art through admirers like Whistler and Van Gogh, who copied his compositions directly. For the modern viewer, his prints offer something rare: stillness, weather, and a deeply observed sense of place.
