About Gunnar Widforss

Few painters have ever made watercolor do what this Swedish-born artist coaxed out of it. Trained in Stockholm before emigrating to the United States in 1921, he found his subject in the American West's national parks, particularly the Grand Canyon, where he settled and worked obsessively until his death in 1934. John Muir's circle championed him, and the National Park Service treated him as something close to an official interpreter of the landscape. What sets his canyon studies apart is patience: layered washes that catch the actual geology and atmospheric shift of the place, rather than the postcard version most painters settled for.
