About Egon Schiele

Few artists drew the human body with such raw, unsettling honesty. An Austrian Expressionist who burned through a career in barely a decade, he treated the figure as something jagged, vulnerable, and erotically charged, all twisted limbs and exposed gaze. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, he absorbed the older master's decorative instincts and then stripped them down to nerve and bone, working in spare gouache, watercolor, and that famously taut line. He died in 1918 at twenty-eight, in the same flu pandemic that took his pregnant wife. A century on, his portraits and nudes still read as startlingly modern, psychologically present in a way most figurative work never achieves.
