About Vincent Stiepevich

Born in Russia in 1841 and trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, this painter spent the bulk of his career in New York, where he became one of the more accomplished American practitioners of late Orientalist genre painting. His interior scenes - languid odalisques, harem musicians, attendants in tiled chambers - belong to the same nineteenth-century European tradition as Gérôme and Ernst, though his handling of fabric and ornament has a softer, more theatrical touch. For collectors drawn to the lush surfaces and narrative atmosphere of the period, his work offers Orientalism at its most painterly, well after the movement's French heyday.
