About Andreas Cellarius

A Dutch-German cartographer working in seventeenth-century Holland, he produced one of the most visually ambitious star atlases ever printed: the Harmonia Macrocosmica, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1660. Its twenty-nine hand-colored plates laid out the competing cosmologies of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe in elaborate Baroque allegory, complete with cherubs, instruments, and zodiacal figures wheeling around precise geometric diagrams. He was a schoolmaster by profession, rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, which gives the work its curious mix of pedagogical clarity and theatrical flourish. The plates remain the high point of celestial cartography as decorative art - science rendered as spectacle.
