About Robert Reid

One of the Ten American Painters who broke from the Society of American Artists in 1897, he brought a distinctly decorative sensibility to American Impressionism. Trained at the Art Students League and then the Académie Julian in Paris, he absorbed the plein-air lessons of his French contemporaries before returning home to paint women in gardens, among flowers, lost in quiet thought - subjects he made his own. His brushwork is loose and high-keyed, his palette unafraid of pink and green pushed to their limits. For viewers drawn to turn-of-the-century Impressionism with a softer, more intimate register, his garden pictures remain some of the most quietly pleasurable in the American canon.
