About Joseph Henry Sharp

Among the founders of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915, this Ohio-born painter built his life's work around the Plains and Pueblo peoples at a moment when he believed their traditional cultures were vanishing. He studied in Munich and Paris before settling into long winters painting Crow and Sioux subjects in Montana and summers in Taos, where his careful, ethnographically minded portraits sat alongside warm interior scenes lit by firelight and lamp. Deaf from childhood, he was a patient, observational painter rather than a flashy one. The pictures hold up because they treat their subjects as individuals first and symbols second.
