About Fernard Khnopff

Among the founding figures of Belgian Symbolism, he turned away from the Impressionists' sunlit world toward something stranger: enigmatic women, hushed interiors, and dreamlike landscapes drawn from memory rather than observation. Trained in Brussels and influenced by the English Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Burne-Jones, he helped found Les XX in 1883, the avant-garde group that pushed Belgian art into the European mainstream. His paintings from the 1890s, with their cool palettes and androgynous, sphinx-like figures, distilled the era's fascination with silence, introspection, and the unknowable. For viewers drawn to quiet mystery rather than spectacle, his work still feels genuinely otherworldly more than a century later.
