About Louis Rhead

Born in Staffordshire in 1857 and trained at the South Kensington School of Art, this English-born illustrator became one of the defining poster artists of the American Art Nouveau movement after settling in New York. His commercial work for magazines, books, and consumer brands in the 1890s placed him alongside Will Bradley and Edward Penfield as a shaper of the golden age of American poster design, with clear debts to Eugène Grasset's flat color fields and decorative line. For collectors today, his posters offer that distinct moment when fine art crossed into advertising without losing its craft, all sinuous contours, ornamental borders, and confident graphic restraint.
