About Antonio Mancini

Few nineteenth-century painters loaded a canvas with as much physical paint as this Roman virtuoso, who built up surfaces with a thickness and tactile glitter that bordered on sculpture. Trained at the Naples Academy and emerging in the 1870s alongside the Verismo painters, he drew the admiration of John Singer Sargent, who called him the greatest living painter of his day. His subjects ran from street acrobats and saltimbanchi to society portraits, all handled with the same restless, glinting impasto. For viewers today, his work offers a bridge between academic realism and the looser, more sensual experiments that opened the door to modern painting.
