About John Atkinson Grimshaw

Few Victorian painters owned a subject the way this Leeds-born artist owned the gas-lit street after dark. Working from the 1860s until his death in 1893, he built a career around moonlight, wet cobblestones, bare trees against amber skies, and the particular hush of a English suburban lane at dusk. Largely self-taught, he worked outside the Royal Academy circuit and drew quiet admiration from Whistler, who reportedly conceded that he had thought himself the inventor of nocturnes until he saw Grimshaw's. The atmosphere he captured - solitary, slightly mysterious, unmistakably autumnal - reads as cinematic to modern eyes, which is part of why his reputation has only grown.
