About Eugen Von Blaas

Born in 1843 to Austrian parents in Albano, near Rome, this painter became one of the great Venetian genre specialists of the late nineteenth century. Trained under his father Karl, he settled in Venice and built a career on scenes of local women at wells, windows, and waterfronts, rendered with an almost photographic finish that the Academic tradition prized and the Impressionists were busy rebelling against. His figures flirt, gossip, and pause mid-task in clear Adriatic light. For viewers today, the appeal is straightforward: a master draughtsman who treated everyday Venetian life with the seriousness others reserved for myth, and made it quietly charming in the process.
