About Walter Ufer

One of the Taos Society of Artists' more politically restless members, he arrived in New Mexico in 1914 after training in Dresden and Munich, bringing a European command of figure painting to the high desert light. Where some Taos painters romanticized their Pueblo subjects, his canvases gave Native sitters a directness and dignity rooted in his socialist sympathies and friendship with the people he painted. By the early 1920s he was winning major national prizes and outselling most of his Taos peers. The work holds up because it refuses sentimentality: sun-struck color, real people, and a quiet insistence that everyday life in northern New Mexico deserved serious attention.
