About Jean Louis Forain

Trained in the orbit of Degas and Manet, this French painter and printmaker spent his career dissecting the social theatre of late nineteenth-century Paris with a satirist's eye. Born in 1852, he moved fluidly between the Impressionist circle and the world of caricature, contributing biting drawings to Le Figaro while exhibiting alongside the painters who would define modern art. His backstage scenes, courtrooms, and intimate domestic moments share Degas's interest in the unguarded gesture but carry a sharper, more journalistic edge. For viewers today, his work offers something rarer than pretty Impressionism: wit, social observation, and the quiet drama of ordinary lives caught mid-sentence.
