About Suzanne Valadon
She painted women the way women actually inhabit their bodies—solid, unselfconscious, occasionally bored. Born in 1865, she modeled for Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Puvis de Chavannes before picking up a brush herself, and Degas spotted her talent early enough to mentor her into a serious practice. By the 1910s and 1920s she had developed her own language: thick black contours, flattened space, jarring color that owed something to the Nabis but answered to no one. Her nudes refuse the male gaze with a directness that still startles. For a viewer today, her work reads as quietly radical—domestic scenes painted with the bluntness of a self-portrait.
