About Henri Lehmann

Born in Kiel in 1814, this German-French painter trained directly under Ingres in Paris, and it shows: the disciplined contour, the careful anatomy, the cool moral seriousness of French academic neoclassicism filtered through Romantic subject matter. He spent his career between portraiture, religious commissions, and large decorative cycles for Parisian churches and the Hôtel de Ville, and eventually took up a professorship at the École des Beaux-Arts, shaping a generation of younger painters before his death in 1882. His drawings reward slow looking. The figure studies in particular carry the quiet authority of an artist who believed the human form was worth getting exactly right.
