Few painters did more to invent the landscape as we know it. Working in Haarlem and later Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age, this seventeenth-century master turned ordinary terrain into something charged with weather and mood, training his eye on towering skies, ruined mills, dense forests, and rushing water with a seriousness usually reserved for portraiture or religious scenes. His influence runs straight through Constable, Turner, and the Hudson River School, all of whom borrowed his sense of atmosphere and his trick of giving clouds a starring role. The appeal today is the quiet drama of it: nature treated as a subject worth real attention.
