About Frederic Bazille

One of the founding figures of Impressionism who never lived to see the movement named. Born into a Protestant Montpellier family in 1841, he shared a Paris studio with Monet and Renoir, often bankrolling them when their canvases weren't selling. His own work sat somewhere distinct from his friends': cleaner contours, a stronger architectural sense of figures in space, southern light handled with unusual clarity. He was killed in action during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, aged twenty-eight. What remains is a small, concentrated body of work that feels surprisingly modern, holding figures, sunlight, and stillness in a balance his contemporaries kept chasing.
