About Jan Brueghel The Elder
Few painters in the early seventeenth century could render a petal or a beetle's wing with the patience he brought to the panel. Working in Antwerp from the 1590s until his death in 1625, he earned the nicknames "Velvet" and "Flower" Brueghel for the tactile precision of his still lifes and the dense, jewel-like detail of his paradise landscapes. He collaborated often with Rubens, supplying the flora and fauna while Rubens handled the figures, and he was the son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. His paintings reward slow looking - the longer you stay with them, the more small marvels surface.
