About Henri Lebasque

Often called the painter of joy and light, this French Post-Impressionist built his reputation on intimate domestic scenes and sun-drenched Mediterranean landscapes rendered in soft, harmonious color. Born in 1865, he co-founded the Salon d'Automne in 1903 alongside Bonnard, Matisse, and Rouault, and his friendship with Henri Manguin drew him south to the Côte d'Azur, where his palette warmed considerably. While his contemporaries pushed toward Fauvism's bolder shocks, he kept faith with quieter pleasures: women in gardens, children at the shore, dappled afternoons. For collectors drawn to the gentler side of early modernism, his work offers French light without the sharp edges.
