About Jules Cheret

Often called the father of the modern poster, this French printmaker transformed advertising into a legitimate art form in the 1880s and 90s. Working from his Paris workshop, he refined a three-stone lithographic process that allowed for rich, glowing color on a scale the streets had never seen before. His airborne dancers and laughing women, the so-called Chérettes, became the public face of Belle Époque nightlife and helped pave the way for Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, and the entire Art Nouveau poster tradition that followed. For collectors today, his images carry the particular charge of a moment when commerce, theater, and fine art briefly shared the same wall.
