About Oscar Bluemner

Trained as an architect in Berlin before emigrating to America in 1892, he abandoned buildings for paint around 1910 and never looked back. His landscapes of New Jersey mill towns and Harlem River backwaters are unmistakable: blood reds, deep cobalts, acid greens cranked to an emotional pitch that owes as much to German Expressionism as to the American scene. Alfred Stieglitz showed him at 291, placing him squarely among the first generation of American modernists alongside Marin, Hartley, and Dove. For a contemporary eye accustomed to bold color, his work reads as startlingly modern - small, charged paintings where a red barn becomes a state of mind.
