About John F Peto

Working in the shadow of his friend William Harnett, this nineteenth-century American painter took trompe l'oeil still life somewhere quieter and stranger. Where Harnett polished every surface to a mirror, Peto (1854-1907) favored worn ledgers, frayed ribbons, battered tin cups and letter racks tacked with yellowing envelopes - the visual poetry of objects nobody else thought to paint. He spent his later decades in relative obscurity in Island Heights, New Jersey, and was only properly rediscovered in the 1940s after decades of his canvases being misattributed to Harnett. The melancholy of his compositions reads now as oddly modern: still, faded, deeply human.
