About Cassatt Mary

One of the few Americans to exhibit with the French Impressionists, she built a career out of subject matter her male peers largely ignored: the quiet, unsentimental intimacy between mothers and children. Degas spotted her work at the Paris Salon in 1877 and invited her into the Impressionist circle, where she absorbed his draftsmanship and his interest in unusual cropping and perspective. Her later prints, influenced by a landmark exhibition of Japanese woodblocks in 1890, are remarkable for their flattened space and confident line. The domestic world she painted still reads as modern today — observed rather than idealized, tender without ever tipping into sweetness.
