About Arthur Frank Mathews

Few American painters did more to shape a regional aesthetic than this San Francisco figure, who, with his wife Lucia, built what came to be called the California Decorative Style. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris in the 1880s, he absorbed Puvis de Chavannes's muted tonalism and classical allegory, then transplanted that sensibility to the coast of Northern California, where cypress, fog, and pine became his recurring vocabulary. As director of the California School of Design and editor of Philopolis, he influenced a generation of Bay Area artists. His canvases still read as quietly modern: spare, lyrical, and grounded in a specific patch of Pacific landscape.
