About Robert Henri
The ringleader of the Ashcan School believed paint should move fast and mean something. Trained in Philadelphia and Paris in the 1880s and 90s, he rejected the prettified academic portrait in favor of loose, vigorous brushwork that captured a sitter's personality before it captured their finery. His 1923 book The Art Spirit shaped generations of American painters, and his teaching at the Art Students League made him as influential a mentor as he was a painter. His portraits of children, working people, and Native sitters from the American Southwest still feel alive on the wall - direct, unsentimental, and almost startlingly human.
