About George Romney

One of the three great British portraitists of the late eighteenth century, alongside Reynolds and Gainsborough, he built a fashionable London practice in the 1770s and 80s without ever bothering to join the Royal Academy. His style is the loosest and most romantic of the three: fluid drawing, cool clear colour, and an emotional reserve that gives even his society sitters a quiet inwardness. He painted Emma Hamilton more than sixty times, casting her in mythological roles that prefigure the Pre-Raphaelite imagination. For viewers today, his portraits read as surprisingly modern in their psychology, sitters who feel less performed than caught mid-thought.
