About William Merrit Chase

Few American painters absorbed European technique as fluidly as this Indiana-born Impressionist, who studied at Munich's Royal Academy in the 1870s before returning to become one of the most influential teachers his country ever produced. His brushwork is loose, alla prima, deeply confident - a wet-into-wet bravura learned from Munich and later softened by the brighter palette of French Impressionism. He painted Shinnecock dunes, Brooklyn parks, his own daughters reading by windows, all with the same easy authority. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is immediate: light handled without fuss, scenes of quiet leisure rendered by a painter who clearly enjoyed the act of looking.
