An oil on canvas measuring 86.5 by 80 centimetres, *Nude With Cat* presents a nude figure in a crouched position, captured in a moment of tender interaction with a cat.
The small yellow cat is, in truth, a supporting player — the crouching female nude holds centre stage, leaning forward to offer the animal a dish of milk.
The figure, rendered with vivid red hair, is seated on a colourful surface and surrounded by abstract patterns — a composition that feels simultaneously domestic and charged. Expressive brushstrokes and bold colour accentuate the contours of the human form, while the background resolves into abstract patches of colour that push the emotional temperature of the work well beyond ordinary representation.
The free handling of colour owes a visible debt to Matisse and the Fauvist artists , giving the canvas a warmth and restless energy that feels more Mediterranean than German.
Marc painted *Nude With Cat* in 1910 — a year that proved pivotal on multiple fronts. That year he had his first solo exhibition in Munich and formed his important friendship with August Macke.
Shortly before painting it, Marc and Macke had seen an exhibition of Matisse's work at the Galerie Thannhauser in Munich, and those paintings proved a significant source of inspiration for both. The work sits at a distinctive crossroads in Marc's development: it marks a pivotal point in his transition from figurative forms to Expressionism, and then toward outright abstraction. Where his celebrated animal paintings of 1911 and beyond would fully commit to symbolic colour and quasi-mystical form, *Nude With Cat* is still anchored in the human figure — but already restless with the impulse to push beyond it. Today the painting is housed at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich , alongside many of Marc's most significant works.
