Court portraiture in late eighteenth-century Europe had a few reliable hands, and this Italian-born, Austrian-trained painter was among the most sought-after of them. Born in 1751 in Romeno, he built his reputation in Vienna, Warsaw, and especially St. Petersburg, where Catherine the Great kept him busy painting the Russian aristocracy with the kind of polished neoclassical restraint the era demanded.
