About John La Farge

Few nineteenth-century American artists moved as fluidly between worlds as this one: muralist, stained glass innovator, watercolorist, and writer, equally at ease painting Newport landscapes or Samoan portraits. Born in 1835 to French émigré parents in New York, he developed an opalescent glass technique in the 1870s that rivaled and arguably influenced Tiffany, and his religious murals at Trinity Church Boston helped reshape American ecclesiastical art. His watercolors from Pacific travels in the 1890s carry a quiet, observational warmth that feels surprisingly modern. For viewers drawn to the meeting point of Western tradition and global curiosity, his work still rewards close looking.
