About Luis Melendez

Few painters have ever looked at a melon, a clay pot, or a wedge of cheese with the forensic attention this eighteenth-century Spaniard brought to the table. Working in Madrid in the 1760s and 70s, he produced an extraordinary series of around forty-five still lifes intended for the Prince of Asturias, each one cataloguing the produce of Spain with near-scientific clarity and dense, theatrical lighting borrowed from the Caravaggesque tradition. He died in poverty, and his reputation took two centuries to recover. Today his work reads as both deeply traditional and startlingly modern, a reminder of how much weight ordinary objects can carry when someone really looks.
