About Owen Jones
Few designers have shaped how we see ornament itself. A Welsh-born architect and design theorist working in Victorian London, he served as Superintendent of Works for the 1851 Great Exhibition and went on to publish The Grammar of Ornament in 1856 - a comparative atlas of decorative patterns drawn from Egyptian, Moorish, Chinese, Celtic, and Byzantine sources, among others. His proposition was radical for its moment: that non-European traditions held design principles equal to anything in the Western canon. The chromolithographed plates remain a working reference for designers, and on a wall they still read as both scholarship and pure visual pleasure.
