About Gwendolen Mary John
Working in a register so quiet it almost dares you to look away, the Welsh painter spent her career on a narrow set of subjects: solitary women, nuns, interiors lit by a single window. The restraint was the point. Born in 1876 and trained at the Slade before settling in France, she moved in the orbit of Rodin (as model and lover) and Rilke, while her brother Augustus took the louder fame. Whistler shaped her tonal sense; her own contribution was a chalky, matte surface and a stillness no one else quite managed. For viewers tired of noise, her sitters offer something rarer: company without performance.
