About Joshua Johnson

Working in Baltimore between roughly 1795 and 1825, he holds the distinction of being the first known professional artist of African descent in the United States. Likely born into slavery and later freed, he advertised himself in 1798 as a "self-taught genius" and built a portrait practice serving the city's merchant class, sea captains, and abolitionist families.
