About Gottfried Lindauer

Born in Pilsen in 1839 and trained at the Vienna Academy, this Bohemian-born painter emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 and spent the rest of his career producing meticulous portraits of Māori sitters, often working from life and photographs commissioned by the Auckland businessman Henry Partridge. His tightly rendered surfaces preserve the moko, heirloom taonga, and bearing of rangatira from the late nineteenth century with an ethnographic precision that has made his work central to ongoing conversations about portraiture, taonga, and cultural memory in Aotearoa. For viewers today, the paintings carry a quiet, formal gravity - portraiture as historical record and as personal presence.
