Among the American realists who came of age in the 1910s and 1920s, few painted portraits with quite the same grave, sculptural authority. A student of William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri at the Art Students League, he absorbed the Ashcan School's directness but moved toward something quieter and more monumental, often compared in his own era to Bellows and Kroll. His 1926 portrait of actress Katharine Cornell as Candida remains his best-known work, a study in stillness and theatrical poise.
