About Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Co-founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, he set out with Millais and Hunt to drag English painting back to a moment before Raphael standardised everything - jewel colours, flattened space, an almost medieval seriousness about beauty and symbol. His later work narrowed obsessively onto a single subject: the long-necked, full-lipped woman, modelled first on his wife Elizabeth Siddal and later on Jane Morris, painted as Dante's Beatrice, as goddesses, as something between portrait and devotional icon. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is the strangeness underneath the prettiness - paintings that look romantic at a glance and turn out to be about grief, desire, and a private mythology.
