About Henri Riviere

Few French artists absorbed Japanese woodblock printing as deeply as this Parisian printmaker (1864–1951), who studied Hokusai and Hiroshige with the seriousness of a translator rather than a tourist. His series Les Trente-six vues de la tour Eiffel openly answered Hokusai's Mount Fuji, transposing ukiyo-e composition onto modern Paris. He also designed elaborate shadow plays for the Chat Noir cabaret in Montmartre, a quietly radical fusion of printmaking, theater, and silhouette. For contemporary viewers, his prints offer something Art Nouveau rarely managed: a calm, almost meditative flatness. Soft palettes, strong silhouettes, weather and water rendered with restraint. Quiet work that rewards living with it.
