About Olga Rozanova

Few Russian avant-gardists pushed abstraction as far, as fast, as she did. Trained in Moscow in the early 1910s, she moved through Cubo-Futurism and Suprematism before arriving at something genuinely her own: spare, luminous color fields like the 1917 Green Stripe, which anticipated Color Field painting by three decades. She illustrated Kruchenykh's zaum poetry, exhibited with the Jack of Diamonds and Supremus groups, and worked closely alongside Malevich while resisting his orbit. Her death from diphtheria in 1918, at thirty-two, cut short one of the most original voices of the period. Her paintings still feel forward-leaning, charged with the urgency of an artist racing her own ideas.
