About Joaquim Vayreda Vila

Among the founding figures of the Olot School, this nineteenth-century Catalan painter brought the lessons of the Barbizon painters home to the volcanic landscape of Garrotxa. After studying in Paris in the 1870s, where he absorbed the quiet naturalism of Corot and Millet, he returned to northern Catalonia and turned his attention to peasant labor, woodland light, and the soft greys of an Olot afternoon. Works like La Sega capture rural work without sentimentality, while his rare foray into commercial design for Crème Simon shows a lighter hand. For viewers drawn to honest landscape painting rooted in a specific place, his canvases still feel grounded and unhurried.
