About Rachel Ruysch

Among the Dutch flower painters of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, she stands at the very top — and she knew it, signing her work and commanding prices that rivaled Rembrandt's. Trained in Amsterdam under Willem van Aelst, she developed a darker, more dynamic style than her contemporaries, arranging blooms in asymmetrical sprays that seem to spill out of the canvas, often with an insect or lizard tucked into the shadows. She painted into her eighties, producing roughly 250 works across a sixty-year career. For a modern viewer, these bouquets reward close looking: every petal, beetle, and dewdrop is a small argument for patience.
