About Johan Barthold Jongkind

The Dutch painter Monet called his "real master" deserves the credit. Working in France from the 1840s onward, this nineteenth-century landscapist bridged the careful observation of the Hague School with what would soon become Impressionism, painting Dordrecht harbors, Paris streets, and Normandy coastlines with a loose, atmospheric touch that felt radical at the time. His watercolors, made on the spot, fed oil paintings finished in the studio - a method Boudin and the young Impressionists studied closely. What lands today is his weather: low northern light, wet quaysides, twilight over canals. These are quiet pictures with real air in them, made by someone who saw before he painted.
