About Worthington Whittredge

Among the second generation of Hudson River School painters, he brought something quieter to American landscape than the high drama of Cole or Church. After a decade studying and working in Düsseldorf and Rome in the 1850s, he returned home and turned his eye toward the more intimate corners of the American scene: birch groves in the Catskills, orchards at midday, a stretch of Rhode Island coast. Born in Ohio in 1820, he served as president of the National Academy of Design and counted Bierstadt and Gifford as close colleagues. His landscapes reward patient looking, trading spectacle for the particular light of a place actually walked through.
