About Albert Aublet

A French academic painter trained in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, he absorbed his teacher's polished surfaces and orientalist appetites while developing a softer, more atmospheric touch of his own. Born in Paris in 1851, he moved fluidly between mythological subjects, society portraits, and scenes drawn from travels in North Africa and the Ottoman world, exhibiting regularly at the Salon from the 1870s onward. His mythological work in particular leans into a dreamy, moonlit sensuality that sits at the meeting point of academic rigor and late nineteenth-century symbolism. For viewers drawn to classical figuration with a quieter, more reverie-bound mood, his paintings still hold real charge.
